Our Kids

I've noticed a lot of people in Kōrepo who are saying things about our kids. "These kids are very hard to engage" "These kids are non-readers, we won't be able to do that" "These kids are really difficult to manage, we need someone to shut them down."

I understand that they know our students really well, which is great, it's good to have people who know what we're going into. It's also important to have an open mind though. I know that this learning can work with low decile students if we set it up right, but we have to come into it with the right mindset and not use a deficit model from the beginning.

My questions are how can I help to open up other people's mindsets, and forget about their pre-conceptions of what these students can or can't do?

  1. I hope that the recent kaiārahi session gave a few ideas - happy to discuss further and also reflect on your actual interventions when similar conversations arise in future
