Exhaustion sets in

It's been a really hard term.

I had the flu for the first couple of days of the year when the Kaiārahi were meeting on their own which made for a rough start to the year. Near the end of term one I was plagued with Pericarditis which lasted 5 weeks, and completely did away with any exercise, which means my general health went downhill too. I had a second dose of the flu term 3 and then have a kidney cyst which has given me some abdomen pain. I wonder if my Pericarditis has come back too as I have a bit of a sore chest today.

I feel like a hypochondriac.

A lot of these health issues I think are down to stress. It's been an incredibly stressful year - with students who have behaviour issues that are off the charts, and a co-leader who doesn't really know how to lead.

Behaviour has calmed, and I think some of that is down to us creating a positive culture, and relationships being built with teachers, but there are still a lot of students who are leaving school, leaving class, and just not really caring about what happens. We still don't have enough time to follow up with all these students and make sure that they are all talked to about what they've done. It should be a puna ako teachers responsibility, but when do they do this?

We talked yesterday about the puna ako teachers responsibilities, and I think this is something that we are going to have to hash out for the start of the year. Our teachers are feeling very overworked, with attendance stuff, behaviour stuff, relationship building with parents, social emotional learning. But if this stuff is the important stuff, then Andy says we need to make more time for it. Juanita suggests he is living in an idealistic world.

I guess it's hard to create a model to support learning when there are no examples off the model anywhere else in the world. But there must be some models that are good that we can base some things on. Something needs to change for next year to give Puna Ako more time to do these things, or something will brake. It's too stressful and too exhausting to do this at the moment.

I may mock up some timetables for next year and try and figure some things out.
