Wooranna Primary School

Notes from the visit:

Students have diaries with goals sessions

STEAM is used by students using science, technology, engineering, and maths to escape from a teacher led situation.

Flow:
Do you know what to do?
Conference with the teacher to create questions - create more questions as you research to create a whole year project.

Home room groups are different ages - year 5 & 6

Literature circles are everyone reading books related to their research.
Although later the Principal said they were discussions about big ideas and values where teachers use a provocation. Students can create projects out of it, or can just help to make students comfortable speaking in a group. He may have got literature circles and learning symposiums mixed up, as the kids and he told us two different things. These can be a great place to reflect on their own and other's work.

Learning Symposium is a group of students having a discussion around a topic which is introduced to them by a teacher. A big philosophical debate.

This programme seems really free - they could have more specific integration of maths and science into their programmes.

Parliament is run by students, but teachers facilitate. I wonder how much power the students really have, or whether this is just another name for student council.

All students collate a learning portfolio and they choose what to put in it. One piece of work, annotated. Some handwrite a blurb for each piece of work.

Each part of their independent projects (Enigma projects) have specific accomplishable goals.

In one hub we went into, all students were writing about the same thing at the same time, but could choose the perspective they were writing from (child's, mother's dog's). Each perspective had a different area of the classroom to work in. One student chose the mother and was working on her own.

Technology suite where students could programme lego robots, enter competitions, and create computer games.

Some students for their Enigma project set up a young leaders conference for their outside community.

The school ran a bank of money where students could apply for loans for their projects.

Question: "How are we as educators going to handle knowledge doubling daily?"

"Productive learning is where the process engenders and reinforces wanting to learn more."

The ultimate goal of school is not to create students with employable skills, but enhance human talents. Don't produce more sheep.

Students went on live youtube to plan their day in the morning and could get instant parental feedback.
